It’s a major misconception that when you move into a senior home that you aren’t able to continue on with your current lifestyle. That can’t be further from the truth! Senior communities have some of the richest, most rewarding lives possible because of the incredible people who live there and the love and care that the community puts into their centers. Astoria’s Omaha senior living communities are no different.

At the heart of our Omaha senior communities is a kind, caring staff who want to use their expertise to help you or your senior loved one to live a full, happy, fulfilling life, even after moving into a senior living community.

Here are a few ways for your senior to get out and get active:

1. Stay Physically Active

While it might be tempting to stay sedentary all day to read or watch TV, it’s important to remember to get out and get active as often as you can! Staying physically active is extremely important not only to your physical health, but to your mental health as well. Staying physically active can help to improve your balance and mobility, improve your cognitive function, and help to keep diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes more regulated.

Keeping active also helps to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety that are so prevalent in senior adults. Even just being outside and soaking up the warm rays of the sun can help!

2. Keep Up With Your Social Life

Moving into one of our Omaha senior living communities doesn’t mean that your social life is over and done with! In fact, living in a senior living community can be a huge boost to your social life in a way you may have not anticipated!

Many senior living communities offer ways to get out of your room or apartment and get involved with the community that you’re living in! Activities like art or cooking classes, fitness classes, and more wait for you as soon as you take a step out of the doors of your room. Or, if you’re interested in trying something new, you can always create a club or group of your own for new friends with shared interests!

That’s the best part of living in a senior living community: you’re sure to be surrounded by people who have similar life experiences and similar interests and hobbies that you do. No matter what it is that you enjoy, whether it be crafts or cooking, you’re sure to find someone who loves the same things you do – and you’ll make a friend for life.

3. Don’t Neglect Going to Check-Ups

While check-ups aren’t the most fun things to go to, getting regular check-ups is extremely important to maintaining your health and wellness. That doesn’t only mean physicals as well! Getting regular check-ups applies to all aspects of your health, including your eyes and your teeth.

When you get regular check-ups, you’ll immediately know if something is wrong and you’ll have early warnings about any kind of health issues that you may have. That also includes going to the doctor if you feel off or ill in any way. Putting your health first is paramount to living a long, happy, and healthy life!

It can be tempting to stop taking prescription medications when you start feeling better, but it’s vital to your health to continue taking the full course of medication that you’re prescribed. When your doctor prescribes you medication, they’re doing it based on several factors: age, health, illness, and more are all contributing factors to how much medication you may be prescribed and for how long.

Even though you may feel better and don’t think that you need to continue taking the medication, you shouldn’t stop taking any prescribed medication without first speaking to your doctor.

5. Follow a Healthy and Well-Balanced Diet

You might be surprised at how important a healthy and well-balanced diet is to a continued long and healthy life! Foods are full of vitamins and nutrients that are important to continued immune system health, like omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, iron, and zinc. A popular diet is the Mediterranean diet, which is full of fresh, leafy vegetables, olive oil, fish, whole grains, and legumes. This type of diet gives you plenty of variety in your food choices while still staying healthy.

This doesn’t mean that you aren’t able to indulge in sweet or “unhealthy” things every now and again! The important thing is to enjoy these luxuries in moderation. Don’t make your entire diet package, processed foods, even though it might be tempting!

Places like our Omaha senior living communities give all of our senior residents the opportunity to have a healthy, well-balanced meal at any time. Instead of struggling to cook, prepare, and clean up after your own healthy meals, senior living communities can help you to create a personalized meal plan that gives you all of the vitamins and nutrients that you need.
